Today I would share about Web Searching topic based on my lecture class.
Web Searching is an action to find information or media in computer database or network (by using world wide web WWW)
Web browser can be defined as a software application used to locate and display web (eg: Google Chrome, Mozilla, Internet Explorer)
Normally, user that using WWW will face some difficulties such as inaccurate findings or the site might be available on short time
There are four categories of web searching
1. Directories
- This category is generate by searching or opening the link provided in a page or copying it from other website
- Example: https://www.youtube.com
2. Search Engine
- Search engine is a program that available by opening it using WWW with internet access
- From there, user can type anything that he/she want and millions of related results will be seen provided with the link
- Example: Google, Yahoo
- This method perform as all-in-one search engine platforms
- Many links from all search engine will be resulted if user enter a findings/query
- Example: Metasearch.com , Metacrawler.com
4. Yellow Pages
- This classical method usually provided in a thick book
- The yellow pages provided links commonly related with business
- White pages of the book provide telephone number and address any findings
There are some techniques to search information or media in web
1. Terminology
- Search Tool: Any mean to locating information on the Internet.
- Query: Information typed into the form on the search engine.
- Query syntax: Rules for constructing a valid query.
- Query semantics: Rules for defining the meaning of a query.
- Hit/Match: A URL that the search engine returns for a specific query.
- Relevancy score: A value that indicates the quality of the URL
2. Pattern Matching Queries (Fuzzy Query)
- User can enter ungrammatical sentences or incomplete sentence fragments
- The search engine gets a collection of keywords
3. Boolean Query
- A Boolean Query is a query that consists keywords but with logical operators
- Query SEE AND OLD – will results URLs that contain both SEE and OLD
- Query SEE OR OLD – will results URLs that contain either SEE or OLD
- Query SEE AND NOT OLD – will results URLs that contain SEE and do not contain OLD
I also want to share some ways in determining efficient search engine in web such as:
- Have a user-friendly interface
- Easy-to-understand documentation
- Convenient to access
- A large indexed database
- Assigning good relevancy scores
If user is having few search results, try this method:
- Generalize the query
- Eliminate one of the more specific keywords of the query
- Remove the keywords with AND operator, or delete the NOT item
And if the user need more specific search results, the user can try this method:
- Needs to specialize search query
- Try capitalizing proper nouns or names
- Use a directory to locate your information
- Use AND with other keyword, or add NOT operator to excluded some unwanted pages
We often to question how the process of searching in web. These are the simple process about it:
1. User interface : Allows you to type a query and displays the results
2. Searcher: The engine searches the database for matching your query
3. Evaluator : The engine assigns scores to the retrieved information
4. Gatherer : The component that travels the WEB, and collects information
5. Indexer : The engine that categorizes the data collected by the gatherer
And Finally, these are few tips that can be use in searching any query in web:
- Be natural: do not need to insert long query
- Capitalize: if the query is specific
- Use uncommon keywords: will get most related results
- Correct spelling: Beware the American and British English language. It might effect the search results
